Because a woman’s work is never done.
and is underpaid, or unpaid, or boring, or repetitious,
and we’re the first to get fired,
and what we look like is more important than what we do.
And if we get raped its our fault
and if we get beaten we must have provoked it
and if we raise our voices we’re nagging bitches
and if we enjoy sex we’re nymphos
and if we don’t we’re frigid
and if we love women it’s because we can’t get a real man
and if we ask our doctor too many questions we’re neurotic or pushy
and if we expect childcare we’re selfish
and if we stand up for our rights we’re aggressive and un-feminine
and if we don’t we’re typical weak females
and if we want to get married we’re out to trap a man
and if we don’t we’re unnatural
and because we still can’t get an adequate, safe contraceptive, but men can walk on the moon
and if we can’t cope or don’t want a pregnancy we’re made to feel guilty about abortion
and for lots and lots of other reasons
we are part of the women’s liberation movement.
- Joyce Stevens, International Woman’s Day, 1975.

It really is a shame that it is that way. Its a double edge i suppose, I don’t think its right myself
Oh man. I know a couple chauvinistic guys who ought to get this tattooed on them… love your blog, by the way.
I know I’m showing my age but I actually remember this being plastered everywhere and guys getting really mad about it. And those who weren’t mad were just confused. Times haven’t changed much.
I’ve always felt stupid for thinking like this. Not because of man, but because of the women I’ve meet who told me this thoughts aren’t fit for a girl or women…but I’m from Romania. (sorry for my bad English – I couldn’t help to post a comment)
Damn right. Wish i could’ve been alive during the women’s rights movements/equality movements like those in the 70′s. Wish there would be another one, cuz things still arent equal, and it seems im the only girl anymore who’s pissed about that. Everyone else has just “settled” and gets pissed at me whenever I go on one of my feminist rages.
Great Blog! I loved it.
otherwise well put, but the bit about the contraceptive is pushing it. men are still waiting for their pill. all men have is a raincoat, while women can practically stop the rain with a dozen mechanisms. oh but then again i see this is -75, so i guess i should be surprised thats the only dated bit.
Amen to that!!!!! I agree with everything that is listed especially being underpaid or unpaid part. I’m a RN and gee-wizz we get paid peanuts and what makes this matter worst, we are suppose to be responsible for people’s lives yet sales people make more money than us. Common!!!!!!
The world would be a better place if not only men but also women knew the true meaning of these words and ideals.
What gives me hope, is the short time span. Yes, things are the same as they were in 1975. Some superficial differences. Some worse, some better. But, there is hope. Think about it. 100 years ago, women were not even citizens, in the legal sense. A woman could not get legal recompense for rape or spousal abuse because it might “disrupt peace at home.” Now, it’s getting better. Let’s celebrate the strides we have made, and it makes the failures much more easy to bear. Don’t give up home. No man is free until all men are free. No human is free until all Womyn are free. We can do this. Each one of us is a revolution in and of ourselves. NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER SURRENDER!
