Obama Funds Abstinence Education

Dear President Obama,

It was really awesome a year ago when you decided to cut funding of abstinence-only sex education and instead put that money toward teen-pregnancy prevention. It was definitely a progressive step in integrating the values of waiting till you’re older to have children and the values of teenagers are going to fuck no matter what.

But recently you decided to backtrack and put a whopping $250 million into abstinence-only education.

What exactly is abstinence-only education? Defined by the board of health, it is “teach[ing] that abstinence from sexual activity is the only certain way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and other associated health problems.”

In other words, children and teenagers are not given any actual information on sex. Just a stern look accompanied with ‘Don’t fucking do it, okay!?’ Also, its a load of bull. Hey it’s great if you don’t want to bone until you’re married, really, it’s completely okay and respectable.  But it’s not everyone’s moral beliefs/cup of tea. The straight up reality is TEENAGERS ARE GOING TO HAVE SEX. It is not that hard to figure out tab A to slot B. The internet itself provides endless resources for how to have sex (and unfortunately not enough resources on how to be smart about it).

By not teaching children about exactly how STDs spread, what condoms are, different forms of birth control (and how some are more safe or more harmful), and how pregnancy actually works, all it is doing is creating a mess of lies and misconceptions. When I was in comprehensive sex-ed in middle school, it did NOT make me want to jump into the sack (as so many pro-abstinence education people believe it does). Learning about the real risks, implications, and necessary precautions that came with sex only made me realize that it was a pretty big deal and I was too young for it.

Knowledge is power, people. By depriving children and teenagers of life-saving information that they so desperately need, you are only creating bigger problems. The more you know, the less likely you are to do something stupid.

In the above linked article, it notes a January 2009 study which found that “religious teens who take virginity pledges are less likely to use condoms or birth control when they become sexually active, and just as likely to have sex before marriage as their peers who didn’t take pledges.”

Why the heck are you pouring money into a system that has no evidence of ever working, Obama? It’s like saying, “well making children eat bananas everyday for lunch will make them forget about sweets and thus end child obesity.”

One good part is, $75 million will be put toward “personal responsibility education” which includes abstinence and contraception teaching. It’s a start, at least.

Yes, children should be encouraged to delay sexual interactions, definitely. But if you haven’t noticed, teenagers aren’t exactly known for doing what they’re told. Preventative measures, people. Do you really want your government restricting life-saving information?

Religious Group Advocates Stoning in 2010

I’m sure we all heard the recent news about a killer whale at Seaworld killing a trainer. People’s opinions seemed to be mostly split onto two sides; those who believe the whale was acting on instinct, and never deserved to be in captivity, and those who believe the whale is at fault and should be euthanized or sent back into the wild.

Then there’s the American Family Association, a religious group based in America that mostly concerns itself with poking its nose into places no one wants it. They stepped forward (because no one asked for their much needed opinion) and announced what they thought should happen to Tilikum the whale.

Apparently, it should be stoned to death along with its trainer, because that’s what Jesus would do.

From the article:

‘If the counsel of the Judeo-Christian tradition had been followed, Tilikum would have been put out of everyone’s misery back in 1991 and would not have had the opportunity to claim two more human lives,’ said Bryan Fisher on the AFA website.

‘Says the ancient civil code of Israel, “When an ox gores a man or woman to death, the ox shall be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten.”‘

Well, okay, I guess that was cool to do back in 300 BC or whatever when there was no PETA or knowledge that animals are more advanced than rocks. The AFA put notice of all this on their website, and has also been writing to Sea World asking them to stone the whale.

Fisher goes on to explain that the stoning shouldn’t stop at the whale either, but also the trainer. He says, “The Scripture soberly warns, if one of your animals kills a second time because you didn’t kill it after it claimed its first human victim,  this time you die right along with your animal,”

Um?

Firstly, the whale. Sadly the first thing that popped into my head wasn’t, ‘How cruel!’ but rather, ‘How the eff do you stone an entire whale?‘ I mean, do you lay it on the beach and stone it while dies out of water, so ultimately it just dies from being on land? Do you stone it while its in the water? In which case what if the tank is big enough for it to move away from the stones? Are the stones really big? Who finds and throws these big stones? So many questions. I bet Jesus never had to figure out how to stone a damn whale.

Secondly, the trainer. Ironically enough, the AFA is both pro-life, and pro-death penalty, and apparently pro-whale death and pro-whale owner death. I guess babies have a right to life until they pop out the womb, then if their whale kills someone its all over. What if the baby owned the whale, like those zoo programs where you ‘adopt’ an animal and send money for it to eat or whatever? What happens when a monkey is adopted through a baby’s name, and the monkey kills a bunch of people? What then, AFA? WHAT THEN?

Quickie: Keepin’ It In The Family

Late last year in Georgia, the unthinkable happened. A political sex scandal. I know, I know, insane right? Representative Glenn Richardson, a married republican who was a big advocate of family values (I.E. monogamy), was outed for having a sexual affair with a lobbyist.

Richardson resigned amidst the scandal, and Paulding County voters hit the polls last week to elect their new representative. The winner?

Daniel Stout, another republican who preaches family values. The only difference is, Stout had already had his affair revealed. But he went the extra mile. Oh yeah, why stop at banging the intern? Why not just incorporate your affair into your agenda?

Stout admitted to previously cheating on his first wife. While she was pregnant. WITH HIS WIFE’S MOTHER.

At least he kept with those family values…sort of…right?

Who knew semi-incestuous adultery was a family value?
